Cold Sores and its Treatment
Jun 30th
A virus called HSV causes herpes simplex. HSV are of two types- HSV1 and HSV2. HSV 1 normally causes oral herpes or cold sores. The virus is normally contacted during childhood when an infected person kisses a child. Though HSV2 can also occur in the oral area, it rarely causes oral herpes. But the virus that causes cold sores can easily cause genital herpes. Let us find out more about cold sores.
There are a large number of home remedies for cold sores. In some cases these traditional treatments have been known to work as well as antiviral pills or numbing creams. One advantage of using a home remedy for cold sores is that treatment can begin immediately since there is no need to visit the doctor to get a prescription or go to the drugstore and choose between several creams. As soon as someone realizes they are developing a cold sore, they can begin the home remedy.
Treatment:
1. Avoid frequently touching the cold sore and covering it up with makeup as this will worsen the condition and may even cause secondary infections.
2. Keep the cold sore clean and dry by washing it with a damp washcloth and soap once every two hours. Also, it needs to be completely drained of all fluid, so sterilze a needle with some rubbing alcohol and then puncture, drain, and dab up the fluid from the cold sore with a Kleenex or some tissue paper. If you’ve ever done this with a pimple then you know what I’m talking about.
3. You should completely avoid over exposure to both harsh winds and intense sunlight. These environmental conditions intensify the herpes virus outbreak problems. The herpes simplex virus gets activated in these extreme conditions.
4. Studies have shown that glycyrrhizic acid, an ingredient in licorice, stops the cold sore virus (Herpes Simplex 1) dead. So you can try chewing a licorice whip, just be sure it’s made from real licorice, as most “licorice” candy in the United States today is flavored with anise. If the ingredient list says “licorice mass,” then the product contains real licorice. You could also try buying some licorice powder and sprinkling it on the sore, or mix up a cream with a pinch of licorice power and a little bit of vegetable shortening, then apply to the cold sore.
5. Lemon juice is also considered one of the cold sores home remedies. Lemon juice is known to speed up the healing of many skin conditions, not just sores. Its healing properties are very effective in alleviating the symptoms related to cold sores. Apply lemon juice extract directly to the blisters to achieve its powerful healing action.
6. Take herbal treatments such as antiseptics Tea Tree Oil and Sage, etc. Seek medical advice before attempting this cold sore treatment.
7. The coldsoretreatment started with Aspirin and Acetaminophen to get relief from the pain of herpes virus sore outbreaks. Later on the powerful oral anti viral medications like Acyclovir, Famiclovir, Valcyclovir, Penciclovir etc hit the cold sore cure market.

Jun 28th
Question by flabbrgastdNY24: Can you use abreva and other cold-sore remedies (like Carmex) at the same time?
I think I have 2 cold sores, one in each corner of my mouth. They hurt like hell! I’ve been using Carmex to get rid of them and relieve the pain but it isnt helping them go away, just numbing the pain. So I bought Abreva today to try that. Is it ok to use both at the same time? The abreva so far is not helping the pain. What should I do? This sucks!

Answer by Drews_babe3
I don’t see why you can’t use both at the same time…Abreva will help speed healing, but doesn’t contain an analgesic to relieve pain, which Carmex helps out with. You can also consult Abreva’s website to help answer any additional questions.

Cold Sores And Remedies
Jun 28th
A cold sore is normally caused by the herpes simplex 1 virus, although they can be caused by the herpes simplex 2 virus which is more commonly associated with genital herpes. You can get cold sores from someone infected with the virus who has an active blister. You can also get it by sharing eating utensils, towels, drinking glasses, or anything else that may have come in contact with an infected lesion. Fortunately, there are home remedies and herbal remedies that work well for cold sores. Some remedies can alleviate the symptoms and lessen the time of the outbreak. Cold sores are also called fever blisters.
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (simply known as “HSV”), usually the type 1 strain (HSV-1), while HSV-2 is the one typically responsible for genital herpes, although it should be noted that both types can cause either oral or genital herpes, it’s just that one particular strain more commonly causes one particular manifestation of the disease than the other.
There are many remedies for cold sores; however, not all of them work. The ones that I know work for sure are garlic and green tea. Garlic is a very good remedy for preventing and treating cold sores because it is a natural antibiotic. Garlic is a virulent germ killer. Taking this powerful herb internally and applying it to the cold sore will do wonders for you. Green tea is also a good remedy because it has special properties that kill germs and bacteria. Taking a used green tea bag and applying it to the affected area can help alleviate the pain and lessen the duration of the sore.
The home remedies for cold sores are:
1. The first home remedy for a cold sore is to use ice. When you feel a tingling sensation or feel that you’re about to have a breakout, rub ice over that area. It will help prevent the sore from developing. It won’t actually cure your cold sore, but it will help.
2. Another home remedy for cold sores is to rub aloe juice on it. This is an effective way to get rid of cold sores.
3. Using tea bags is another home remedy for a cold sore. Tea bags have tannic acid in it, which is very effective for stopping breakouts. Placing tea bags on your sore will help reduce the pain and help decrease the development of your cold sores.
4. Another home remedy for cold sores is to use petroleum jelly. Using petroleum jelly on your cold sores will prevent them from cracking and spreading. So, place some petroleum jelly on your sore.
5. The fifth remedy for your cold sore is to apply petroleum jelly onto your sores. This will help keep them from cracking or spreading.
These are the remedies for cold sores. If you have sores, you need to do something about it right now. If you wait, you might be at risk of having a severe breakout or you could possibly spread the sores to other people.

What is it that Causes Cold Sores?
Jun 27th
Well, first of all, what are cold sores? They are lesions on the lips, or on the skin near the mouth.
People can be exposed to different causes of cold sores, each and every day. They are often referred to as “fever blisters.” These lesions can be painful. They usually last a few days. They are caused by a virus. But, unlike other viral infections, these sores are not completely eliminated by our body’s defense system. This is the reason why they usually recur over time.
So … What Causes cold sores?
The main cause of cold sores is the herpes simplex virus is t. While there are two types of herpes simplex virus, the main culprit for these fever blisters is Type 1. This type affects the body tissues that are found above the waistline.
Most viral infections are caused by exposure to the germs themselves, but this is not one of the causes of a cold sore. It occurs, not with the recent contact with the herpes simplex virus, but with the reactivation of the HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus) particles that are already in your body. These germs are already residing inside the body before being reactivated, but are then “awoken.”
Initial contact with the virus does not result in the formation of the actual sores; and therefore it cannot be detected immediately.
A person with this virus would first be inflicted with fever, headache, and difficulty swallowing. The person might also be easily irritable. A day or two after these initial symptoms occur, the person will usually feel pain in his mouth, and the gums will also become inflamed. On the third day blisters appear near the mouth or lips. The blisters will pop, over time, but the person’s mouth will remain painful it will be hard to eat.
The sores themselves will heal over time. The infection period lasts between 10 to 14 days. But when the virus remains in the body, cold sores can repeat again at a later date.
Most cases of such infections occur before the age of seven. This is why many people don’t know the actual causes. Further, the majority of people who are inflicted with fever blisters (another word for cold sores) don’t even know they have them. The symptoms are subclinical, and not obvious to the normal person. The patient might only feel one or two mild sores near his mouth.
Fever usually accompanies the sores, and the common flu virus can also reactivate the virus. Getting your skin sunburned might also trigger cold sores.
What do you do when you have cold sores? How do you treat them? There are many natural remedies which can be tried. For more information on treatments and remedies for cold sores, please visit Cold Sores – Treatement & Remedies.
Preventive Measures To Keep Away Cold Sores
Jun 26th
It’s very common and can happen to you sitting anywhere under the sun. The fluid-filled blisters on your skin due to the attack of cold sores are nothing but infection caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). The blisters turn red and cause pain to your skin. You constantly feel irritating and develop an itching sensation. But a slight scratch on a blister with your nail makes the problem adverse.
The cause of cold sores
HSV is the key to trigger this disease. But without any medium for transmission, how can HSV get inside your body? It is generally through close contact a normal person gets infected from an infected person. One obvious root of transmission is through kissing.
The problem of cold sores can occur in children as well as adults. The chance of the virus to get into the body is more when you are a kid but the virus comes into active form when you enter the boundaries of teens. To define it in medical terms, the chance of catching cold sores is more after you have reached puberty.
The path followed by HSV
It is the upper layer of your skin, the epidermis through which the HSV gets into the cells. The route the virus follows begins here and slowly moves along the nerves. Finally it hits the nerve roots and gets inert.
The ways to block the path and check cold sores
The obvious way to get infected is coming into close contact of the fluid-filled blisters. Therefore always prevent yourself from getting in direct touch with those affected from sores. The most dangerous aspect of cold sores is that they can spread all over your body without even leaving an inch area around the genitals.
If you have fever with cold sores, that’s another big head ache. Fever and staying for long under scorching rays of sun intensify the problem and cause swelling of the sores. If women develop cold sores with the onset of their menstrual cycle in a particular month, it becomes a panic situation for them. The burns of sores are more during this time.
The problem of cold sores gets complicated in the sensitive parts of your body. Especially blisters around the eyes can even damage them. You must be very careful in washing hands and then touching these sensitive organs.
Apart from precautions you must also know some medicinal treatments which will help you to cure this problem. Anti-HSV pills are available in the market but before taking the medicines, always consult the doctor for the right dose. Ointments and creams are also available. The main component in them is acyclovir (5% of the composition) and found in different brand names. Use any one directly on the sores for 4 to 5 times a day. This will certainly provide you with a major relief. But above all there is no substitute to cleanliness to keep the cold sores away.
